Pastoral

Anti-bullying

All UK state schools, by law, need to have an anti-bullying policy.

The core values of The Compass Academy are forgiveness, endurance and community.

In order to promote this the themes of equality, tolerance and a respect for others run throughout our curriculum and pastoral core.

Compass Academy’s aim is for pupils to leave with all the tools they need to be successful, positive contributors to society, both within and outside of their own local communities.

Bullying is counterproductive to this aim and therefore bullying is not tolerated at The Compass Academy.

The Compass Academy uses a range of approaches to educate our young people to prevent incidents of bullying. The Compass Academy considers an act of bullying to be any act designed to wilfully hurt, upset or threaten another person. This is inclusive of actions which are: verbal, physical, cyber and emotional. This includes incidents where the aggressor’s motivators are based on racism, homophobia, a superior sense of possessing physical or intellectual attributes, accent or socio-economic status.

The Compass Academy also has a range of approaches in place to resolve and deal with bullying issues, should they still arise. These include: ‘no blame’ support groups, restorative practice and circle time in conjunction with, where required, sanction, reprimand and parental involvement.

If you have a bullying concern, please contact us immediately in one of the following ways:

Telephone: The Compass Academy and ask for your child’s Tutor or SLO.

In person: ask your child to approach any member of staff.

Emotional Wellbeing

At Compass, we are committed to supporting the positive mental health and wellbeing of our whole school community (children, staff, parents and carers). We have a supportive and caring family ethos and our approach is centred on the value of ‘kindness’, where every individual is valued and respected. We endeavour to ensure that children are able to manage times of change and stress and aim to ensure that they are supported to reach their potential or to access help when they need it.

We also have a role to ensure that children learn about what they can do to maintain positive mental health, what affects their mental health, how they can help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues, and where they can go if they require help and support.

At our school, we understand that at times, life presents us with challenges that can make us feel vulnerable and at times, we may require additional emotional support. We take the view that positive mental health is everybody’s business and that we all have a role to play in supporting each other.

For concerns relating to your child’s emotional wellbeing, please contact the Academy’s Mental Health Lead, Miss R Murray.

Family Support

At The Compass Academy, we have a dedicated Family Liaison Officer (FLO), Debbie Coyle, who supports families through their time with us.

Debbie has worked at The Compass Academy for over 20 years and is also our Child Protection Coordinator. As the Family Liaison Officer (FLO), she can be a listening ear and offer support, advice and guidance to parents/carers and families around specific issues you may be struggling with.

For example:

  • Being worried about your child’s behaviour.
  • Being worried about your child ‘s emotional or social wellbeing.
  • Support around adjusting to changes within the family home.
  • Helping them with anxiety and building self-esteem.
  • Support and signpost to more specific and targeted services in the local community

As well as the supporting children and families role, Debbie will also be supporting the school to promote good attendance. She is here to reassure you and help your child to achieve excellent attendance. Your child’s attendance should be in excess of 95%. Therefore, if you are struggling to get your child into school, please contact Debbie to see what support is available to prevent this from escalating.

If you need to discuss any issue please contact Debbie Coyle on 01482 331720 or email: d.coyle@com.hlt.academy
